Cultivating the Expansive Heart

“Love is the only thing that doubles every time it is given” – Albert Shweitzer

It is said that the Buddha taught 84,000 different antidotes to 84,000 different afflictions and obscurations of the human mind. Put another way, the Buddha taught many diverse methods to awaken beings of many diverse dispositions.

But one thing that is constant in all the Buddha’s teachings is that every method was offered freely and lovingly to any being who showed interest. Within every method of practice, the practitioner is reminded to tend to their own unfolding with engaged, loving presence. We could say then that all 84,000 diverse methods are underpinned by love.

The result of loving engagement with one’s own path of awakening, are ever-expanding feelings of love, compassion, joy, and serenity, collectively known as the ‘four limitless qualities.’

These are not Buddhist qualities. They are universal qualities that transcend traditions of spirituality and religion. They are universal qualities with the power to transcend the suffering and dissatisfaction inherently associated with self-clinging and self-preservation. This is why the Buddha, along with many other beings throughout history and across traditions, have placed such great importance on the development of these four qualities.

These are the four qualities of universally radiant consciousness.

These classes will explore traditional and contemporary methods for developing these four radiant states, and through practising together we can encourage these states to develop as traits, bringing benefits for self and others.
